Gotenba High School: Thursday, October 15

Glad to be out of the tiny rooms, we board the bus for today's adventure.

The High School administrators wait for us.

We begin to gather for the group pose.

Capturing the moment!

The slippers are already out and waiting for us. Lovely!

The reception room is lovely! Not only do we have a fabulous centerpiece, but also lots of student art work surrounds us.

We are placed in assigned seats, and then the opening remarks begin.

Dana Stone addresses the group on behalf of the FMF teachers.

Syl Williams gives greetings and gifts from her school, and Dana presents gifts from the FMF group.

Mt. Fuji smiles down on the school today. She can be seen from the hallway windows!

As we wait for the class period to begin, we are invited to view the samples of student art work on display in the hallway.

The students in the clothing design class have created drawings of the clothes they were designing, then created patterns and sewed the garments. They were having a fashion show, and were critiquing both design and construction during this class.

In another class, students are measuring, cutting, and constructing traditional "happy coats." It is fun to try them on!

Students are in different phases of completing their garments.

Students have their sketch of the pattern design in their notebooks. Sometimes, the pattern is constructed on computers, then the pattern is printed out.

We then visit a calligraphy class. Students are learning the Chinese characters. They do a pretty nice job..

..but then it's OUR turn! The students guide us..quite a bit!

In art class, we see both line drawing and collage art being created.

In band, many different small groups are working together preparing for a presentation. It's pretty confusing, but the kids know what to do.

In History class, we recognize the Elizabethan period dress. Students have both textbooks and teacher prepared dittos to use.

We get to see the students work their robots to lift pop bottles.

In another classroom, students are using graphics software to design web pages. They are working off-line, so they are not able to access their web page from this room.

In science class, several lab activities are going on. It appears they have several activities they need to complete.

In physics lab, they are doing an activity involving weights. They carefully measure the height of the pole and the distance the weight travels when the string is cut.

In English Language class, the students are doing a quick warm-up relay using several words they have learned on a topic.

Oh, my word! Algebra is algebra no matter where you are!

In another art design class, students are creating stencils.

We also see some of the computer designs created for us!

The computer lab has a gazillion computers, and had 3 teachers in there!

Sharon Ponder has found a kimono to model for us!

We received a fabulous lunch. I'm still trying to master the hashi!

The president of the student council addresses our group, and then we are presented lovely gifts from the three design strands.

Then we watch the Kendo club activity for a few minutes.

The thick bars on the Kendo mask hints at how strong the blows can be with the bamboo poles.

We briefly met for a closing ceremony at the Alumni building, which is used for overnight club activities.

The staff and PTA members stood outside in the rain to wave goodbye.
